A big hello to all of our drinkers, and we hope you’re having a lovely week! We have a whole host of exciting news packed into our latest newsletter, including a Silver medal win for our American Pale Ale, Outlawed, at the Midland’s SIBA Awards on Friday, as well as a nomination in the North Notts Business Awards, our upcoming Christmas beers and info on stocking up on them for the festive season, our new beer, Exodus, and lots more!

SIBA Award

We are very pleased to announce that our triple-hopped citrussy APA, Outlawed, won a silver award in SIBA's Midlands Independent Beer Awards 2017, Cask Standard Bitters and Pale Ales category on Friday! A huge thank you to the organisers and the judges, and of course to our wonderful drinkers, and a big congrats to our Head Brewer Keir for the sterling work he’s been doing on our brews! This follows on from a Gold Award for our porter Drop O’ The Black Stuff in last year’s awards, and another silver the year before that, so we’re very happy to see our beers being celebrated and gaining critical acclaim.

We’re also always very interested in hearing your feedback on our brews, and like to feature your reviews on our website and social media, so if you’d tried one of our beers recently, please let us know what you thought on  or via our Facebook page

We also very much welcome your reviews of our beers Untappd, via their website ( or app, or on Ratebeer (!

Current Seasonal Special – Surrender

Our current seasonal special is our beautiful South Pacific Pale, Surrender, made with Vienna malt, and finest Equinox and Cascade hops for a hit of tropical fruit flavours. It’s always a real favourite, so catch it while you can!

Upcoming Seasonal Specials for the Festive Period

We also have two very special seasonal brews coming up to see us merrily through the festive season - Fallen Angel, which is pale, with citrussy flavours and cinnamon warmth will be available from mid November, and Rudolph’s Ruin, which is caramel-coloured, with fruity flavours of dates and figs will be ready for the start of December.

Our Beers in Craft Kegs

Following its popularity in cask, our lovely South Pacific Pale, Surrender, is soon to join Roaring Meg and Outlawed in keg form. The craft kegging process, in which the beers are unfined and lightly filtered to maximise in aroma, taste and clarity has proved fantastic in preserving the flavours true to their original format, so if you haven’t tried them yet in keg we highly recommend them! We’re also very happy to see that producing our beers in kegs has enabled a whole host of other pubs and bars to stock our beers who previously weren’t able to. If you’d like to try them in your local, ask your landlord to get in contact, or let us know where and we’d be happy to give them a call to see what we can arrange!

This month, our brewers have also been busy with a new concoction - introducing our brand new beer, EXODUS!

Exodus, 3.7% ABV, Colour: Golden

Tasting notes: A bright golden-coloured beer, with a bold citrus flavour, balanced by a biscuity malt body, and with a burst of grapefruit aroma. Refreshing and clean tasting; the perfect session beer.

Background: Exodus is our newest brew, light, and packed with fresh citrus flavour. It is brewed using Pale and Munich malt, Cascade hops, and an all-natural grapefruit infusion for a tropical citrus burst.

The beer has had a great reception so far, and has gone out to several wholesalers already, so let us know if you spot it on a bar near you! Exodus has been flying out the brewery – so much so, that we’re already had to produce our second brew of it!

Stock up on our Beers for Christmas!

With the festival season just around the corner (how did that happen?!), we’ve also been preparing for the Christmas rush by getting in new batches of our two bottle and a branded Springhead glass presentation gift packs, as well as our 17 and 35 pint boxes of beer, which are perfect to see you through Christmas and New Year or for your next party! We also have our beers available for you to enjoy at home in bottles, cans, or even a full 9 gallon cask for the more ambitious beer connoisseur. Call us on 01777 229 020 or email for more info or to arrange to collect your order either from our brewery in Laneham, near Retford, or from our central Nottingham pick up point in The Park (NG7), or ask our team if we’re able to deliver to your door!

Our brewery tap, Meg’s Bar, will also be open as a pop-up Christmas shop for you to call in, sample our Christmas seasonal specials and other beers, and stock up on our beers in all formats from 9am-4pm from Monday-Friday the week before Christmas (18th to 22nd December).

Roaring Meg Cans in Regional Co-op Branches

We’ve also had a new batch of cans of our flagship IPA made up in preparation for Christmas, and also ready for our first order to go into regional Co-op Branches! Please let us know if you spot it on the shelves, and what you think to the cans! The cans are 330ml craft cans, which are looking and tasting great, and you can also buy the cans direct from us in packs of 6 or cases of 24.

Nottingham Robin Hood Beer & Cider Festival 2017

Finally, a big thanks to everyone who visited us, stopped to chat and enjoyed a beer with us at the Nottingham Robin Hood Beer and Cider Festival, where we had a Springhead bar from the 11th to the 14thof October. We had a fantastic weekend there, tried some truly delicious beers, and were very happy to see so many friendly faces visiting our bar and trying the eight beers we had on over the weekend. If you have any pictures from the festival, please send them in!

I think that’s everything for now – it’s been a busy month! As always a huge thanks for all of your support.

Best wishes,

Latest news from Springhead Brewery
Welcome to our latest newsletter from Springhead Brewery! With the summer in full swing and the hot weather finally putting in an appearance and bringing everyone out to play, the beer has been flying out, and there’s plenty to be excited about at Springhead HQ, with our new cans going down a storm, and a whole host of great events on the horizon! Our 2000th Brew!
Firstly, the Springhead family are very proud to announce that this month we made our 2000th brew! That's a whole lot of beer that has flowed forth from our brewery over the years – by our head brewer Keir’s calculations, over 22 million pints of beer, or enough to fill five Olympic swimming pools. A big thanks to all of our drinkers for their support, and of course to our team, and here’s to many more years of fantastic beers shared with fantastic people!

Our 2000th brew was the rebel in our pack, Outlawed, which is a distinctly citrusy and thoroughly quaffable triple-hopped American Pale Ale, that's easy drinking and beautifully light, clean, and crisp. And that's 13,852 pints of golden goodness, just in that one brew! Our Current Seasonal Special

This month, we have the thoroughly delicious Sweetlips available as our seasonal special. Sweetlips is a pale 4.6% abv. beer, made with fresh citrus hops and Californian yeast. Light, crisp, and bursting with grapefruit and mandarin orange flavours, and named after a canon used in the local area during the English Civil Wars, which took its name from a famous ‘lady of the night’ from Hull; she’s been making lots of new friends, so catch her while you can! Sweetlips is also on promotion with Punch Taverns until the end of the month.Blind Tiger and Left Lion Launch

We’re very pleased to say that the launch of our two new brands, Blind Tiger and Left Lion has gone really well, and we’ve had some great feedback on the new names and pump clip designs, as well as lots of support from our drinkers and publicans, and even a feature on their release in the Left Lion magazine, and several other newspapers and magazines including The Nottingham Post, which will being published soon!Blind Tiger is a 4.5% abv. refreshing, pale golden beer, with a fruity flavour produced by adding whole oranges  to the brew, while Left Lion is a 4.0% abv. chestnut-brown traditional bitter with a good head and plenty of hops. Blind Tiger is named after a type of illegal drinking den during in the 1920s, which evaded prohibition laws by disguising themselves as exhibition halls for ‘natural curiosities’, charging patrons a fee to see exotic creatures such as a blind tiger (reportedly a pig painted with stripes), which, surely by coincidence, included free alcohol with admission. Left Lion takes its name from the two great art-deco stone lions in Nottingham City's Market Square, which were sculpted by Joseph Else, the left of which is traditionally known as the city’s famous meeting place. Roaring Meg Cans

The other big news this month is the arrival of our very first Roaring Meg in cans. These are proper craft cans, traditionally produced without pasteurization or filtration, for maximum authentic flavour. Which, I can confirm after thorough sampling, taste fantastic! They’ve been flying out, so much so that we’ve already almost got through our first batch and have just booked in for our second lot of cans. Let us know if you would like to try them too - they're available to the public for £10.75 for a 6 pack, or £39.95 for a box of 24 cans.Surrender

Following the popularity of our beer Surrender as a seasonal special, and some strong campaigning from some of our drinkers, we have also now added Surrender to our core range of beers, at a new higher abv. of 4.8%, and of course, with a new beautiful pump clip design to match! Surrender is a beautiful light golden beer, which is made with finest Equinox and Cascade hops to give hints of citrus and tropical flavours of papaya and mango, and Vienna malt for a rich, biscuity finish. It’s already proving so popular, that we’ve decided that it will be our next brand to make it into craft cans, and should be making its debut in the new format in the next month!Drop O’ The Black Stuff at The Great British Beer Festival

As a silver medal winner at the Nottingham Robin Hood CAMRA Beer Festival in 2015, our lovely Drop O’ The Black Stuff will be available at the Great British Beer Festival in London in August. Look out for our darkest brew!Springhead vs Salopian - Battle of the Brewers

In other good news for Springhead, we were very happy to gain a resounding win in our recent battle of the beers against Salopian Brewery, which was put on by Keele Postgraduate Association. Big thanks to the organisers, the lovely guys from Salopian, and of course the testers for their fine taste! The full results are as follows, and wish us luck in our next Battle of the Brewers, which is set for October, against Slaters Brewery.

1st Left Lion (Springhead)
2nd Roaring Meg (Springhead)
3rd Bullet Proof (Salopian)
4th Hop Twister (Salopian)
5th Outlawed (Springhead)
6th Fat Cat (Salopian)
7th Chameleon (Salopian)
8th Blind Tiger (Springhead)

Keep sending in your pictures if you see the Springhead bus too, as there will be another prize draw next month!Events

With the days getting sunnier and the pubs packed with drinkers making the most of the better weather, we’re really pleased to report that this has been the busiest quarter we have had in a long time! With our brewery running at capacity and our brew team working round the clock to keep up with orders, if this level of demand for our lovely beers continues, we’re going to be needing to put in more conditioning tanks and fermenters!
As well as the booming local trade, the current rapid pace of production in our brewhouse is also due to some pretty big orders in from several of the major pubcos. We’re currently on promotion nationally with Wetherspoons until the end of May, and also Greene King until the end of June with our flagship brew Roaring Meg, which is our classic IPA (also known as The Big Blonde!). As well as this, our beer Sweetlips is available through Punch Taverns until the end of July, and we will be supplying Molson Coors in June too, so if you happen to be in a pub that’s a part of any of the above in the next couple of months and would like to try our beers, just ask the landlord to order them in! All Wetherspoons pubs in the region are now able to take all four of our bottled beers too, so let their staff know if they’re not yet in stock in your local Wetherspoons!

The big news this month, is in introduction of two new brands to our core range. The two beers, Blind Tiger, and Left Lion, were previously known as Maid Marian and Robin Hood respectively. The decision to re-brand was made following feedback from our drinkers that the old names often caused confusion with a number of similarly named beers also available in the local area.

We’re really proud of both of the beers themselves, which have been a part of our core range since 2012 and have a strong fan-base, so we felt it was important to retain the original recipes loved by our drinkers, but that especially with the recent growth and evolution of the craft beer market, it was time that the beers were given new names and identities as distinctive and bold as the brews themselves!

Blind Tiger is a 4.5% abv. refreshing, pale golden beer, with a fruity flavour produced by adding whole oranges  to the brew, while Left Lion is a 4.0% abv. chestnut-brown traditional bitter with a good head and plenty of hops. ‘Blind Tiger’ is named after a type of illegal drinking den during in the 1920s, which evaded prohibition laws by disguising themselves as exhibition halls for ‘natural curiosities’, charging patrons a fee to see exotic creatures such as a blind tiger (reportedly a pig painted with stripes), which, surely by coincidence, included free alcohol with admission. ‘Left Lion’ takes its name from the two great art-deco stone lions in Nottingham City's Market Square, which were sculpted by Joseph Else, the left of which is traditionally known as the city’s famous meeting place.

As well as the new characters within our core range, look out for our new seasonal specials, and if you spot them, please send us a photo of them on the bar along with your feedback to our Facebook page ( – we always love to hear what you think! We currently have Willy’s Wheatbeer in stock, which is a traditional German-style wheat beer, with a delicate, almost floral aroma and an initial fruitiness leading to a long, dry, biscuity finish.

The delicious Sweetlips has also just been brewed and will be hitting the bars this week. It is a light, crisp, 4.6% abv. beer, bursting with grapefruit and mandarin orange flavours, and made with fresh citrus hops and Californian yeast.

We’re also very excited to announce that we've had one of our local buses decked out in Springhead decals, and it's now on the roads spreading the gospel seven days a week! We’re all really pleased with how it looks – let us know if you spot it on the roads, and send in your pic to our Facebook page or to  for the chance to win a free case of Roaring Meg, delivered to your door!

Plans are also coming together for our Summer Festival at the brewery site in Laneham, near Retford, North Notts, which is set to take place from the 22nd to the 24th of July. It’s shaping up to be another fantastic event for beer lovers, as well as the entire family, with a great selection of beers from across the country available, as well as live music, entertainment, family fun, and delicious locally-sourced food. We will be announcing the bands over the next few weeks, so keep an eye on our social media channels and website ( for the latest updates!

Think that's all for now - as always, a massive thanks for all your support, and we hope you enjoy the beers!
