The Leveller  Leveller colour indicator  THE LEVELLER

4.8% abv. Colour: Dark

Tasting notes: A dark, smoky, and intense flavour with a burnt toffee/coffee finish. The Leveller is unique in the Springhead range, brewed in the style of Belgian Trappist ales.

Background: Brewed with Fuggles and Goldings hops, and Marris Otter, amber and roasted malts. A radical civil war era political movement, The Levellers were a thorn in the side of King Charles 1st, who sought a better balance of power between the king and Parliament, by demanding "An Agreement of the People, for the People". Runner up Best Bitter at the Great British Beer Festival.

Food matching: It's intense flavours perfectly complement the smoky taste of a summer BBQ or blackened fish. It also goes well with stronger, gamier meats, or bring out it's rich tones with a sticky toffee pudding or indulgent chocolate dessert! Also great with stilton or other blue cheeses – the stronger the better!

I was recently scanning the beer shelves in Morrisons for new ales and noticed The Leveller. I bought a couple of bottles to try out. Best decision I ever made! I try to go for bottle conditioned beers where available, but they are quite rare in this neck of the woods (Petts Wood). But at last a beer that tastes like it's bottle conditioned. I don't go very much for hoppy beers except maybe in the Summer, so this one really suits my palate. Thank you very much! Trouble is, my wife likes it too.
